Residents of the isthmus city of Madison were proud of their new white granite Statehouse with its classic lines, massive dome and exquisite marble rotunda. Crowding aboard clanging streetcars, citizens pay the 5 cent fare and head home from work.

Atop what is believed to be the only granite dome in the United States stands a bronze statue of a woman named “Wisconsin”, symbolizing the state motto "Forward."
